STUDENTS and staff at York’s Joseph Rowntree School in New Earswick celebrated the achievements of the past year at the school’s annual prize- giving.

This year the guests of honour were Damian Cruden, artistic director, York Theatre Royal and actor Martin Barrass.

The school has formed a close working relationship with the Theatre Royal through the PET Project (Partnership in Education and Theatre) which has resulted in many students going to performances, writing reviews and some classes in textile, stage design and drama workshops taking place at the theatre.

Head teacher Maggi Wright told parents and students that the evening celebrated the values the school holds dear.

Mrs Wright said the school celebrated achievement in its many forms including attendance, effort and contributions to school life, which were values that Joseph Rowntree himself held dear.

She said: “The school has so many students who live up to those ideals and students, parents, staff and governors have all worked hard to achieve our best ever exam results. I am very proud of all the wonderful achievements of so many students.”

Trophies awarded included: The Percy Roberts Student Council Award for services to the school council: Laura Eden. The David Harry Award: James Shipley for outstanding contribution to the life of the school.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation Trophy: Oliver Addison in recognition of outstanding contribution to the wider community. The Chadha Trophy: Nathan Baldwin in recognition of outstanding personal achievement; York College Trophy, presented to the school to mark years of working together and recognising achievement: Cole McFadyean.
