CHILDREN as young as three are being taught French at one York nursery school.
Maureen Augey, who also works as a nurse in the children’s ward at York Hospital, has started teaching French to youngsters at Happy Jays, in Clifton Moor.
Maureen, who is a member of the language organisation La Jolie Ronde, said: “When they’re young, children don’t have the inhibitions we develop when we get older – they just want to join in with their friends.
“I’ve been amazed at how much they have remembered.
“By the end of the first lesson they could say bonjour and recognise how to say their name and count up to five.
“It’s really important to teach languages to children because they become more open and accepting of other cultures.”
