FILM students from a York university are finalists in a national short film competition.

Budding film-makers Stephen Gallacher, Jonathan Ashdown and Sinclair McCutcheon are all graduating film and television production students at York St John University.

They entered The Big Lunch Competition which is running in association with London-based film organisation Raindance and MasterCard.

The brief was to write, produce and direct an advert to promote The Big Lunch, an initiative to turn the nation’s streets into neighbourhoods for a community lunch.

Stephen, 21, said: “We’re thrilled to reach the final. After coming out of university we wanted to get straight back into film-making and this seemed like the perfect project.

“York St John has taught us a great deal about film making and we’re extremely grateful to them for allowing us to use their equipment to make the film.”

The York team is up against 12 other finalists. The winning film will be shown at the Raindance film festival, the largest independent film festival in the UK.

The winner will also get work experience at leading broadcasting company McCann Erickson and £1,000.

The film can be found on the youtube website under the title The Green Big Lunch.
