MEMBERS of York Students Against Cuts are planning a city-centre protest against tuition fee rises, cuts to university funding, and the scrapping of the education maintenance allowance (EMA) to take place on Tuesday.

The group is co-ordinating a demonstration through Facebook, which members hope will see 500 people converge on the fountain in Parliament Street, on the day MPs are to grill Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg on the issue in the House of Commons and hold a debate on tuition fees initiated by the Labour Party.

The York group is are calling on all school college and university students and supporters in the city to join them.

University of York student Sophie Shaw said: “All students are right to be angry – not just for themselves but for future generations of learners. The Government is pushing us into huge amounts of debt even before we’ve begun earning.”
