Intruder scare sparks extra security at St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School in Monkgate

PROBLEMS with thieves and vandals have led a York school to look at improving its security measures.

Planners are examining a scheme to install a 2.4m-high wire fence on the edge of St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School in Monkgate, aimed at deterring intruders from sneaking on to its grounds.

Architects acting on behalf of the school say the existing gap between its site and the neighbouring Government Buildings complex, which houses one of the city’s JobCentre Plus points, needs to be closed to provide better safety and security for pupils and staff, after reports of cars being attacked and bikes being stolen.

They are also hoping to extend the school’s car park by five spaces to ease parking difficulties.

Stephen Young, director of York-based architects Potts Parry Ives and Young, the agents for the project, said: “At the moment, there is a patch of land leading to a gap between Government Buildings and the school which can allow people to get in and cause nuisance.

“Both the school and those who run the Government offices realise there is a problem, so closing off the gap with this fence would be of mutual benefit. If people can get into the school like this, it is something we want to cut out and we hope the fence would act as a deterrent.”

Another Press headline that ever so slightly exaggerates the reality of the story. Hopefully no parents from St Wilfrids have read the headline and misunderstood....

fear-case - another great security word!
