Yoscars competition awards school movie makers at York Racecourse ceremony

“OSCAR” awards have been given to schools across York after pupils made their very own movies.

City of York Council, which ran the Yoscars competition, rewarded six schools for their creations by giving each one an Oscar-style accolade at a glitzy ceremony at York Racecourse.

Among the winners was Clifton Green Primary School. The pupils’ documentary-style film entitled The Vikings scooped the aged seven to nine category. The judges praised the use of animation in the picture and said the movie was well-structured.

Hempland Primary School also won a Yoscar for its effort, The Hair Cut, with judges describing it as engaging. They commended the creative use of props in the film, which they said made them laugh. “Overall, there is a wonderfully surreal sense of fun,” they said.

Carr Junior School came up trumps with its offering Flower Power, with the judges saying: “The school has taken its animation work on to different lengths this year, combining animation with film-making, creative use of fades between shots, some very effective techniques for filming movement, and a nice little twist at the end.”

Scarcroft Primary School landed one of the prestigious prizes for its feature called Spiders Go Home. Also victorious was Tang Hall Primary School’s Charlie’s Wonderland.

Another Yoscar winner was Huntington School, which wowed judges with its movie It’s A Digital World.

“There are lots of good use of different camera positions and angles,” the judges said. The motion pictures, which were judged by an independent panel, were created in the schools as part of their curriculum.

Yvonne Methley, of the council’s learning, culture and children’s services team, said: “The aim of the event is to promote the ongoing development and creative use of information communication technology in our schools.”
