MORE than 700 budding engineers descended on a museum near York to show off their inventions and do battle in a series of contests.
A panel of judges inspected 173 entries in the Engineering Inspirations event at Yorkshire Air Museum, in Elvington.
The youngsters were competing for a variety of prizes, including the Sir George Cayley Cup, which was awarded to the overall winner, Matthew Dennison.
The 18-year-old pupil of Sherburn High School impressed judges with his seating and table arrangement made out of recycled materials, including hardwood and scaffolding poles.
John Bagshaw, his design and technology teacher, said: “This event shows how the quality of engineering is going up in schools – it has definitely helped to get both girls and boys motivated.”
Other highlights included the Solar Transport Challenge, which saw 30 teams compete in either a solar boat, rail or plane category to see whose vehicle could travel the fastest or furthest.
The schoolchildren were also treated to a flypast by a Second World War Spitfire from the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight.
Engineering Inspirations is organised by North Yorkshire Business & Education Partnership and the museum.
