WHAT a way to bunk off lessons – a York school’s business link scheme has students ditching their uniform for a suit and tie, and going in to work for local businesses.

Thomas Genever and Orrin Smith are students at Archbishop Holgate’s new £4 million sixth-form learning centre. They have been working with Carolyn Browne, of CPP – the card protection company at Holgate Park, York. She is one of the business mentors on the new scheme.

Since the launch of the project last month, students can benefit from a host of links with local companies, including the chances of mentoring and internships.

CPP is one of about 40 local businesses that will welcome students as part of the scheme, which has been devised by assistant head teacher Jonathon Britton, together with North Yorkshire Business & Education Partnership.

“We want to put learning in context, making it exciting and relevant for the students who will be going on to university and jobs,” said Mr Britton.
