YOUNGSTERS who won a school lunch competition have been able to treat their classmates to a day on the farm and in the fields learning about the journey their food takes from field to fork.
North Yorkshire County Caterers, which supplies lunches to the county’s schools, has been running a competition for primary school children to celebrate the Year Of Food And Farming.
Children were asked to design their own vegetable garden and answer questions about the growing season for different crops.
Pupils with winning designs from schools across North Yorkshire won days out for their class either at Nun Monkton Estate, a family run farm, or the Stockbridge Technology Centre, Cawood, a research and development company with a brief to encourage the public to take an interest in how their food is grown.
North Yorkshire county councillor John Watson, executive member for schools, said: “Giving children the chance to learn how food is grown and produced is an essential part of their education to lead healthier lifestyles. The more children understand how the growing of food relates to what they eat from their plate the better.”
