THE recycling centres in Malton and Norton are being combined into one unit.
Malton household waste recycling centre is being extended, and the Norton centre closed, in a move council bosses say will improve the overall service for residents.
North Yorkshire County Council currently operates two separate and small household waste recycling centres in the towns. The two sites are too small to offer the full range of services, with Norton recycling and composting only 47 per cent of household waste delivered to it, compared with a council average of 60 per cent.
The site in Showfield Lane is now being extended and will soon be able to offer a full range of recycling services, including plastic bottles, which Norton is currently unable to accept.
It will be renamed Malton And Norton Household Waste Recycling Centre.
The extended site will have improved traffic management, making it easier and quicker for residents to dispose of their waste. The site is expected to recycle and compost at least 60 per cent of household waste delivered to it.
The Norton site will close permanently on June 11.
