WASTE not, want not. That is the motto of a York supermarket, which donates its surplus fresh food, still within its use-by-date, to local good causes.
Haxby and Wigginton Youth & Community Association is the latest group to benefit from the food donation scheme at Sainsbury's, Monks Cross.
The food is used by the association to feed hungry mouths at Oaken Grove Youth and Community Centre, instead of going to waste.
Store manager Steve Thompson said: "We hate wasting food and really believe in that old saying, waste not, want not'.
"We are really happy that local charities within our community can benefit from our food donations scheme."
Eddie Benson, chairman of Haxby & Wigginton Youth & Community Association, said: "This is an excellent scheme which enables our cooks at the community centre to be very creative."
