OAPs urged to watch out for purse thieves

PENSIONERS have been targeted in a series of thefts in town-centre shops in East Yorkshire.

The crimes have seen the thieves often work in pairs, with one recently distracting an elderly woman by striking up a conversation with her, allowing the accomplice to snatch a purse and wallet.

Another incident in the centre of Beverley saw the female victim approached by two women and her purse being stolen while she was distracted.

PC Martin Pepper, of Humberside Police, said: “This kind of theft is becoming an increasing problem in East Yorkshire, particularly during the busy summer period.”

Residents are advised to make sure their purses are kept in closed handbags or shopping bags, avoid crowded shops and never leave property unattended.
