EMERGENCY services were called after Pocklington was hit by flash flooding due to heavy rain.
The fire service and officers from the Environment Agency were called to London Street Bridge following reports of flooding due to the beck breaching shortly before 1pm yesterday.
Water surged up Regent Street and into the Market Place, said local traders, and traffic was stopped.
Both the fire service and Environment Agency worked to clear gutters in the area to allow water to drain.
A fire service spokesman said: “Water is believed to have entered a number of cellars but not in large volume, just a small amount.
“We removed rubbish from the drain grates to allow water to subside.”
The fire service stayed at the scene for about an hour.
Local bus services were also affected, with East Yorkshire Motor Services warning of possible delays.
Adrian Jones, of the Cross Keys pub in Market Street, said: “It nearly came in through the front door but we got some sandbags down. It didn’t come into the pub”.
Fiona Shearer, of The Feathers Hotel in Market Place, said: “It came up to the ramp of the front door but didn’t come in and then the fire service came and drained most of it away. There was a panic but it went pretty quickly and brightened up.”
