FISHERMEN and boating enthusiasts on the East Yorkshire coast are being asked to play their part in a national counter-terrorism operation.
The seafarers have been urged to report any suspicious activity on the water or in ports to police through the Project Kraken initiative, which is targeting terrorists and organised crime gangs using the coastline.
Humberside Police have organised training seminars for sailors in ports in the region. Dr Eric Grove, director of the Centre for International Security and War Studies at the University of Salford, said: “Ports are the interface between Britain and the outside world.”
David Armstrong, a member of the Bridlington-based Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club, said: “I think Project Kraken is a good idea.
“But to a certain extent it is already in existence because I think many people, in Bridlington particularly, would pick up on strange boats coming in.”
