THE fire service is asking residents to introduce a bedtime check into their daily routine in an effort to reduce house fires.
Humberside Fire and Rescue service is promoting three check points to keep people safe from fire by carrying out a bedtime check, fitting smoke alarms and preparing a plan of escape should a fire start.
Last year the service attended 514 house fires, many of which could have been avoided if bedtime checks were in place.
A routine to check the home before going to sleep includes putting cigarettes and candles out properly, checking the cooker is turned off, ensuring all fire embers are extinguished and turning off and unplugging electrical appliances.
