A TEENAGER has appeared before York magistrates charged with assault with intent to resist arrest after an East Yorkshire businessman was allegedly run over by a van.

Peter Rigal of Rigal Chemical and Process Plant Ltd of Whitley, near Goole, spent some time in intensive care following an incident at his business on September 2.

Patrick Smith, 19, of Owston Road, Carcroft, Doncaster, is alleged to have been a passenger in the vehicle that allegedly ran over and injured him.

He is also accused of attempting to steal scrap metal from the site with the vehicle’s driver, who was not before the court.

Smith did not enter a plea to either charge. Magistrates decided the case was too serious for them and sent him to York Crown Court where he will appear on January 12 for a preliminary hearing. He was released on bail.
