A GREAT grandfather has celebrated his 100th birthday with 50 of his closest family members and friends.

Former Newton Upon Derwent farmer Maurice Hayton was born at the beginning of the First World War and grew up with 13 brothers and sisters.

The proud great grandfather of 19 owned his own farm with cattle, pigs and sheep before retiring with his wife, Vera, 30 years ago.

Although he now struggles with poor vision, he celebrated his achievement with many of his great grandchildren, nine grandchildren and three children at his Derwent House Care Home in Kexby.

Mr Hayton's daughter, Christine Garbutt, said: "He lived and breathed for the outdoors and farming has been his life.

"He is very much a family man and is very grateful for it.

"Mum died four years ago but she helped out on the farm.

"His vision is poor but he was still chatting away to people and as long as they introduce themselves he chats to them.

"He likes to keep up to date and still has an interest in politics and current affairs."
