AN OFF-licence is urging its customers and people living nearby to “rush the growler” by reviving a 19th century tradition.

Customers who take empty bottles to the Jug and Bottle in Bubwith can get them filled up with beer or cider on tap, a practice that started in the late 1800s when customers brought buckets with lids on to fill up.

As it was carried home, the bubbles escaping from the beer rumbled, leading to the practice being called “rushing the growler”.

The independent real ale off-licence will offer customers a chance to sample their purchase before buying.
