SWIMMERS at an East Yorkshire pool have celebrated its reopening after a renovation.

Stamford Bridge community pool has been given a new lease of life thanks to the installation of a new oil tank which was paid for by a grant from Engage Mutual, and other refurbishment paid for by the pool's committee.

The pool was founded in 1981 following the death of a local child in the river through the village, and has been run by the community since, to ensure all children in Stamford Bridge can learn to swim in safety.

Hilary Saynor, chair for the club, said: "The pool has been open for more than 30 years and in that time we have taught hundreds of children to swim, as well as offering a wonderful space for families, adults and the elderly to enjoy a few lengths. It’s a vital part of the community and so many local residents play a part in its operation, from our local volunteers to the former Stamford Bridge Primary School pupils who give something back by working as lifeguards at the pool.

"Our pool relies on donations from our fundraising efforts to keep it open. When we were faced with the prospect of a huge bill to replace the oil tank, we knew we had a big task on our hands. The Engage community award has made life easier for us and now the pool can continue to operate, a priceless gift for our community."
