THE East Riding of Yorkshire has been awarded Fairtrade County Status by the Fairtrade Foundation after seven years of work by dedicated volunteers.
In October 2011, East Riding council passed a motion to support Fairtrade and a group called Fairtrade East Riding Network (FERN), and now the Cllr Symon Fraser has congratulated the FERN volunteers for their commitment and achievement years later.
FERN chairman John Turner added: “This has been our aim since we first formed in 2007 and it has been a challenge to fulfil all the criteria required by the Fairtrade Foundation.
“We have been supported by many churches and schools who are actively engaged in Fairtrade and we hope this award will inspire others to join in.”
John said FERN members now want to inspire more people to support Fairtrade, and the group is hosting an public event to celebrate and promote Fairtrade at Toll Gavel United Church, Beverley, from 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 28.
