Up to 30 bags of litter and about 250 used needles were removed from an area of Goole during a huge clean-up.

The rubbish was found at Monkey Bridge on Friday during a clean-up by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Network Rail.

This was the second clean-up this year by staff from both the council and Network Rail to keep on top of the littering and fly tipping. The litter included the usual takeaway cartons, hundreds of crisp packets and drinks cans.

Mike Featherby, head of the council’s Streetscene services, said: “This clean up was something of an achievement because we collected less rubbish than we did at the last one in spring. This time there wasn’t any of the usual dumped furniture.

“Ideally we should not have to do major clean-ups like this but they will have to continue until those few culprits start to take their rubbish home or put it in one of the many litter bins.

“There is also no excuse for dumping furniture, like mattresses and fridges anywhere because we have services to help residents with bulky waste.

“If you see anyone throwing rubbish into the 10-foots or spot a van or flatbed lorry parked up in a quiet lane, take a note of the registration, type of vehicle and any identifying marks. It all goes to helping thwart the fly tippers.”
