PRIMARY schools in the East Riding have achieved the best results in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
The county’s Key Stage 2 (7-11 year olds) results put it top in the region, and 32nd out of 152 local authorities nationally – up from 55th place last year.
In total, 80 percent of the East Riding’s Year 6 pupils have achieved the new “gold standard” of achievement in reading, writing and maths – five percent higher than the national average.
Mike Furbank, the council’s head of education said the results bode well for the future achievements of the children, who have been well prepared for the jump to secondary education, and are particularly impressive given the poor funding the authority receives.
He said: “I am delighted that schools have responded so positively to the challenges of a changing assessment system to support children effectively to produce these outcomes.”
The council’s portfolio holder for children’s services Cllr Julie Abraham has congratulated the children on their achievements, and thanked the staff for their hard work.
She added: “These are excellent results for our children and parents and carers can be confident in the quality of education provided by East Riding schools, with performance above both the national and regional average.”
