MORE young people in East Riding will have the chance to enter the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) scheme, thanks to a donation from local trust.

The Dewhirst Charitable Trust and East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth and family support service have established a new bursary to help young people between the ages of 14 and 24 get involved.

The Trust’s chairman Tim Dewhirst said: “The Dewhirst Charitable Trust is aware of the fantastic benefit young people gain from taking part in DofE.”

Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education said: “This is good news for families and carers that might find the cost of the scheme prohibitive.”

For details of how to apply contact Lynn Harris, DofE Award leader at County Hall on 01482 392806 or email lynda.harris@eastriding.gov.uk

By establishing the new bursary fund we wish that one barrier to joining us – cost – has been removed and said the Trust’s generosity would mean many more young people could take benefit for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme’s opportunities to build their skills and experiences.

The DoE Award opens many doors to higher education and employment opportunities and I am pleased that the generosity of the Dewhirst Charitable Trust will enable many more young people to gain this advantage as they move towards adulthood.”

The award will be administered by the DofE Yorkshire and Humber regional office and YFS.
