WASTE bosses in East Yorkshire say the introduction of fortnightly bin collections has led to a rise in recycling.
The region’s recycling rate reached 58 per cent in February, with the amount of rubbish collected in green bins and being sent to landfill being 684 tonnes less than the previous year.
Up to 130,000 homes are now on fortnightly, rather than monthly, collections, and 20,000 more will receive a collection every two weeks from June.
Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “February tends to be a quiet month for recycling, so To achieve 58 per cent is staggering.”
“Residents told us nearly two years ago that they wanted fortnightly collections and bigger blue bins to be able to recycle more. and they are being proved right month after month.”
In February, 2,344 tonnes of glass, paper, cans and plastics were sent for recycling. across East Yorkshire
