DOGS will be banned from four East Riding beaches from May.

The ban by East Riding of Yorkshire Council will run until September 30, the end of the holiday season. “to ensure children, families and visitors can play in the sand without stepping in something nasty”.

The four areas are Bridlington north beach from the north pier to a line extending east from Limekiln Lane, Bridlington south beach from the south pier to a line extending east from Kingston Road, Hornsea Beach and Withernsea Beach.

Coun Jackie Cracknell, portfolio holder for community improvement and performance, said: “The huge majority of dog owners know it makes absolute sense not to take their pets on to the beaches during those months when children and visitors are running barefoot in the sand.”

Anyone caught walking their dog in the restricted areas during the period of the ban could be issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice.
