PROTESTERS have held a march to oppose plans to remove cobblestones from Beverley’s historic marketplace.

The stones are due to be taken up in January as part of a £2.5 million revamp of the Saturday Market area, but the Beverley Action campaign group, which organised the rally, said the scheme was “crude and inappropriate”.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has said the project has been developed alongside responses to a public consultation and says the cobbles can cause difficulties for “less able-bodied people or those using wheelchairs and prams”.

Professor Barbara English, of Beverley Civic Society, said removing the stone setts, which date back 100 years, was a mistake.
