Defeat for Lord Prescott in Humberside was one of the biggest shocks of the elections.
The former deputy prime minister was dumped out in a run-off with Conservative Matthew Grove in Humberside, where the Labour peer was an MP in Hull for many years.
It took the Tories’ total to 14 of the 41 new posts, with Labour on 12. But there was a strong showing of nine independents, as many of those who did vote turned away from mainstream parties.
Lord Prescott ruled out standing again as police and crime commissioner following his failure.
The veteran politician and former deputy prime minister to Tony Blair hoped to return to representing the public in the inaugural elections, after retiring as a Labour MP in 2010.
That followed his departure from the Cabinet in 2007 where he held the role of secretary of state for transport, environment and the regions until 2001.
