COMPETITION is stiffening ahead of the York Community Pride Awards - with the latest entry in the Health Service Hero category.

Dr David Hayward, of Haxby and Wigginton Health Centre, has been put forward for the award - for the sterling support he has given to a woman through a difficult period in her life.

Dr Hayward, who cares for thousands of patients in the community, has always been there for patient Clare McGuigan.

Clare, of New Earswick, has nominated her "one in a million" doctor for the help and support he has given to her while she has been ill. Clare is disabled down her right side, making it painful to write and walk. After suffering from stomach pains last year she admitted to feeling like she "couldn't carry on". Yet it was Dr Hayward - who was always available to talk - that pulled Clare through the bad times.

Clare said: ""I am disabled down my right side which means I have problems using my hand and I find it difficult to walk. I rely on a crutch to help me, but I find it really difficult to cope - especially when quite often my leg can be really painful and give way. My GP Dr Hayward has really supported me with my disability. I honestly feel there will never be a doctor as special as he is." Dr Hayward said he felt "touched" by the nomination.
