A LOLLIPOP lady who has helped thousands of York's schoolchildren safely across busy roads is in line for a top award.

Morning and afternoon, for more than 33 years, Joyce Donkin has worked as the crossing patrol at Fishergate Primary School.

Everyday, the friendly and familiar figure has braved the elements to keep children safe. In over three decades she has seen thousands of children come and go.

One person who can well remember this friendly face is Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing. Thirty-five years ago Coun Simpson-Laing, of Leeman Road, York, was a child at the school - and now she wants to nominate Joyce in the Public Sector Hero category of The Press's Community Pride Awards for her sterling work in the community.

Coun Simpson-Laing said: "Joyce has worked at Fishergate Primary School as the crossing patrol for more than 33 years. I attended Fishergate between 1972 and 1978 and Joyce was there back then. Joyce has, it seems, never forgotten the many children she has seen across the road and I too have always said hi' over the 30 years since I left school."I would suspect that over the years she has seen thousands of children safely across the road at the school.

"These days she has to contend with increasing traffic and the attitude of some of today's road users. I think Joyce deserves a Community Pride award."

Last year, Joyce was one of seven lollipop ladies who were honoured by City of York Council in recognition of their long-running devotion to helping children across the road.

Joyce was presented with long-service award by the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, who said Joyce's unstinting dedication and loyalty to the job was a "real achievement".

Joyce, 61, says she enjoys her job. "It's fitted in with my children because they all went to Fishergate and I fully intended to do something else when they left, but I never have," she said.

So..you do your job your paid for and your a hero?

Refuse collectors work much harder with greater risk than any lolipop person would.

Yes, why is it a lolipop lady when it's woman but a lolipop person when it's man - go figure.

Refuse collectors get a pay packet, crossing patrols get a pittance for what they do as they only work half an hour each session. Cant see 'viper' giving that sort of commitment to a job whatever the weather day in day out.

...you assume I haven't?

These days I have someone to hold the umbrella for me.

Are these the same Refuse Collectors who won't even empty your bin if the lid is not properly closed and who also only work part time, my ex used to finish every day at lunch time yet was paid for a full day's work.

More the lazy household who don't re-use/recycle properly and who don't ensure their rubbish is secure.
Lolipop lady must walk a few hundred yards in total - bin men walk miles and have to lift and carry tonnes a day. Their services are more needy and used by more people, they deserve the award more.

If Viper feels so strongly why doesn't he nominate someone for the same award? Unless I read it incorrectly, this lady has only been nominated for the award, not already been presented with it.

Anyway, why shouldn't she be given a bit of praise no matter what her job is? Who made Viper Master of the Universe with the last word on deciding who is and isn't worthy of praise in their work?

i hour work a day aprox 200 days a year equates to about 825 8 hour working days which is about 4 years work. So for 29 years off in 33 years she gets hero status and a medal, I work harder walking down to sign on for the dole
