SPORTS enthusiasts in York are being urged to nominate their local heroes for a prize in The Press's annual awards.

The York Community Pride Awards, which are run in conjunction with City of York Council, recognise those who are a credit to the city but who rarely receive the praise they deserve.

The Sporting Hero category rewards someone who has made an outstanding contribution to amateur sport in the city, and we want to hear your recommendations.

The winner need not be a sportsman themselves. So long as they have contributed to local sport, they are eligible for the award.

Last year, the award went to Belinda Turnbull, of Old Earswick, York, who spends seven days a week instructing hundreds of youngsters to county standard at Poppleton Lawn Tennis Club, while also teaching the sport to children at several schools in the city.

If you know of someone who you think has made an outstanding contribution to local sport, we would love to hear from you. To nominate someone, simply fill in the coupon above.

Send us a non-returnable picture of your nominee if you can, along with a supporting statement of no more than two sides of A4 paper setting out why your nominee deserves an award. Send nominations to Community Pride Awards, Paula Homer, The Press, 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN. Alternatively, you can email us at editor@thepress.co.uk

Our judges will select three finalists in each category, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony later this year.

Isn't 'being alive' a necessary qualification?
