PUPILS and teachers at York schools have a chance to show that they are top of the class, by getting involved in The Press's community awards scheme.

The York Community Pride Awards, which the newspaper runs with City of York Council, includes three awards for schools and we want to hear your nominations.

We have awards for Best Primary School Project, Best Secondary School Or Higher Education Project, and Teacher Of The Year, and are wanting people to put forward their suggestions.

The first two awards are for school or higher education projects which have improved their surroundings or the environment in general. The Teacher Of The Year title will go to someone who, through enthusiasm and commitment, truly inspires their pupils.

Last year's primary school prize went to Park Grove Primary School, which held an eco-week to tackle climate change head-on at school level. Canon Lee School claimed the senior school prize for pupils' hard work with their project to create a wildlife haven in the grounds of Rawcliffe Infant School, where some of them started their education.

Teacher Of The Year was won by Gerry Gill. The special needs teacher at Hob Moor Oaks School, York, was nominated by parents Linda Fletcher and Claire Reynolds.

If you think your school has a project worthy of being considered or a teacher deserving of praise, we would love to hear from you. To nominate a person or group, please fill in the coupon that accompanies this article. Send us a picture of your nominee if you can, but please note, we cannot return them.

Send your coupon, with a supporting statement (no more than two sides of A4 paper) setting out why your nominee deserves an award, to Community Pride Awards, Paula Homer, The Press, 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN. Alternatively, you can email us at editor@thepress.co.uk Our judges will select three finalists in each category, and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony later this year. For more information on sponsoring an award category, phone Nigel Briggs at The Press on 01904 567168, or email nigel.briggs@thepress.co.uk
