COMPETITION is hotting up ahead of the York Community Pride Awards 2008 - with the latest entry in the Health Service Hero category.

Retired state nurse Ann Harrison has been put forward for the award for the sterling support she has given to patients across York.

Ann, of Sutton-on-the-Forest, York, trained as a nurse in the 1960s. She has helped thousands of patients across York for four decades until her retirement six years ago.

The dedicated nurse was hailed a hero for her sterling support in the community by former colleague Christine Myers, of Carrfield, Woodthorpe, York.

Mrs Myers said: I worked with Ann in the main theatres at York Hospital for nearly 20 years. Anne was theatre sister and she was very fair and worked hard for the nurses and maintained great standards of nursing practice and care.

"She was happy to be on-call and do weekend cover as well as maintaining a happy marriage to her husband, John, and raising two sons. In all her working career, Ann never had time off sick and would always be there for colleagues' problems with advice and a smile.

"Anne retired six years ago and maintains lunch once a month for other retired nurses while still keeping a keen eye on the health service by being a governor of the Hambleton Branch of York Hospital.

"Anne should win the health service hero award for her true dedication to the practise of nursing."

This summer, a panel of judges including representatives from The Press and City of York Council will deliberate long and hard to whittle down a shortlist from nominations for the 14 categories and the coveted awards will be presented at a ceremony in October at the York Racecourse.

We still need more nominations so we can recognise our community champions. If you think you know someone who is worthy of a nomination then please fill in the online entry form.
