This year’s fundraisers included such an incredible range of strong contenders, the judging panel had a very difficult time choosing between them, but ultimately it was the innovation and foresight of Brian Hughes which helped him win the award.

Dave Sykes’ amazing solo round-the-world microlight flight saw the international media pick up his story, with stories on television and in newspapers all around the world, all of which helped raise awareness of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

More locally, Andrew Fair’s history of raising money for numerous charities over his 25-year career at a York supermarket means he is a very well-known figure in the community, and has helped to raise thousands of pounds for charities including Macmillan Cancer Support.

But it was York barber Brian Hughes’ organisation of the Taking The P race, a maleonly alternative to the Run For All, which raised £13,500 in its first year and more than £15,000 this year, all of which goes to male-specific cancer charities, which saw him presented with the award.

Brian said: “I’m just shocked. Thinking about the people I was up against I thought I had no chance.

“I need to thank Richard Smith, York Knavesmire Harriers, and all the people who helped, because I couldn’t have done it without them, it’s not just me.”
