The Community Pride Awards, held in conjunction with City of York Council, are a celebration of special individuals and groups whose sterling work marks them as true champions of the place where we live and work.

A “ONE in a million” mum could be named the city’s parent of the year.
Hannah and Alex Hutchinson, of Harrington Avenue, York, feel their mum, Diane, deserves some recognition, for the endless things she unselfishly does to help and support them.
Diane single-handily raises Hannah and Alex who say their mum tries constantly tries her best to support and help them.
Hannah said: “My brother Alex and I think our mum should win Parent Of The Year award because without her we wouldn’t be the people we are today. We have our ups and our downs so this award would show her how much she means to us.
“Since our dad left us it has just been the three of us. Our mum has done everything to make us happy and she has put her life on hold to help us and make us happy.
“If we lose something, she finds it, if we need money, she will do her best to find it, whatever our problem, she will try and solve it. We would be lost without her; she is one-in-a-million and we love her so much. I just want her to have the recognition she deserves.”
Meanwhile, a team of young volunteers at a York private school who transformed the gardens at the city’s hospital have had their project nominated under the Best Secondary School project category.
The youngsters from St Peter’s School organised a renovation project at York Hospital in one of the courtyard gardens as part of the NHS’s 60th birthday celebrations on July 5.
About 30 16-year-old volunteers, along with members of St Peter’s staff, took part in the project, transforming a courtyard from a grey and uninspiring space into a colourful and more interesting place.
We have now stopped accepting nominations for Community Pride Awards 2008.
A panel of judges are currently whittling down the nominations ahead of a ceremony to be held at the York Racecourse in October this year.
Our judges will select three finalists in each category, which will be announced in The Press on Wednesday 30 August.
