WE’RE brought up in this country not to like tell-tales. But when the person you are informing on is breaking the law – and possibly putting lives at risk – telling may be the only thing to do.

Motorist Richard Grenda has no one but himself to blame for driving home from the pub with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system. His house was less than half a mile away. The 64-year-old obviously thought he would get away with it.

But he was spotted leaving the Flag and Whistle pub in Huntington before getting into his car. A member of the public tipped off the police, and a breath test revealed Grenda was more than twice the limit.

Whoever called the police performed a public service. It is not the first time Grenda has been banned for drink driving. He could easily have crashed, and hurt himself or someone else.

We hope that this time he has learned his lesson – and that what has happened to him will serve as a warning to others. Meanwhile, if you see someone getting into a car who is plainly unfit to drive, you should feel no qualms about calling the police. You could be saving lives.
