THE BBC’s next big flagship drama promises to be different.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, which airs on BBC One in seven episodes from next month, is set in an alternative 19th- century England in which magic still works.

Most people don’t believe in it, however, until the reclusive Mr Norrell arranges a little demonstration: by bringing statues at York Minster to life.

Cue a series that promises to be deeply strange, compelling viewing.

Best of all, much of it was filmed in Yorkshire.

Peter Salmon, head of the BBC in England, says the corporation represents the faces and voices of people all across the UK, including Yorkshire.

Sally Joynson of Screen Yorkshire says while more drama is being filmed in Yorkshire , the big production companies are still based in London or Manchester.

We need more Yorkshire independent producers whose work is commissioned for national TV – and the BBC can help do that, she argues. She’s certainly right.

But it is still great to see TV drama of the quality of Jonathan Strange being filmed here. Don’t miss it.
