IN 2013, the British National Army Museum voted the Battle of Imphal and Kohima Britain’s Greatest Battle. Often referred to as the Stalingrad of the East, allied logistical and communications superiority were key, not only to gain reinforcements, but for airlifting the 5th Indian Division in only two days.
Imagine, then, if the troops had smartphones in 1944. Well, the internet has long been a feature in modern army operations, now a new reserve unit at Imphal Barracks has become the first to be equipped with the latest web-based communications equipment.
It’s good to see York setting the way, even better to know the unit is named Kohima Troop.
