YORK City manager Russ Wilcox may have cited Saturday’s win over Hartlepool as the best performance of his managerial career, but victory tonight over Morecambe might give him cause to rethink.

Despite having four games left to play, three points will guarantee City’s Football League status because they have a far better goal difference than bottom two Tranmere and Cheltenham.

At this stage of the season it is more about grinding out points than fluent passing and York’s well-timed run of five unbeaten outings has demonstrated a welcome, if overdue, return to form just when it matters most.

The team have knuckled down, taken things one game at a time and with a collective level head put destiny back in their own hands.

Wilcox can take much of the credit for this. He inherited a team with a recent history of dramas, but the changes he has made now seem to be coming to fruition.

Back to tonight - Morecambe offers by far the best opportunity to clinch those much-needed points with the next encounter away at high flying Shrewsbury, followed by a home game against play-off hopefuls Newport County.

Shrimps, on the other hand, have little left to play for this season. Let’s just hope they’re not in York looking to net an unhelpful consolation prize.
