ANOTHER of York’s famous high street names is to be lost.
Whitby Oliver Furniture, which was for many years based in Micklegate before moving to Hospital Fields Road, is to close.
Started by Whitby Charles Oliver in 1897, it has traded as a furniture store, French polisher, cabinet maker, funeral director and even a maker of mattresses.
It was one of York’s oldest shops and a genuine city institution, having been first opened before the Boer War broke out. It will be sadly missed.
