YORK will hopefully be heaving with people over the long bank holiday weekend. With luck, they won’t have their enjoyment spoiled by drunken, boorish behaviour.

Following the success of last weekend’s police crackdown on drunk and disorderly behaviour at the station and in the city centre, officers will be out and about again this weekend.

“While it is not our intention to spoil anyone’s fun, we have a responsibility to keep people safe,” said inspector Andy Godfrey of York Police. “Our officers will... ensure that any antisocial behaviour is dealt with quickly.”

York city centre has a problem with drink-related bad behaviour, especially at weekends and during holidays. It spoils the city for everyone else – and damages York’s reputation as a lovely place to visit. Any attempt to tackle the problem is welcome.

Last weekend’s crackdown by officers from both North Yorkshire Police and the British Transport Police was part of an ongoing operation.

In recent weeks, the British Transport Police have also been checking certain trains coming into the city to ensure they are ‘dry’, so that revellers can’t get drunk before they even get here.

Nobody wants to stop visitors or locals, for that matter, from having a good time. It is just a question of remembering that there are other people who want to enjoy the city centre as well. A little bit of consideration is all that’s needed. Remember that, and everyone should be able to have a great holiday.
