YORK could become a ‘city of rainbows’ this summer to show its support for gay rights. York Pride wants to project rainbows onto key landmarks in a gesture of support and solidarity. It imagines a rainbow on Clifford’s Tower, and the zebra crossing at Bishopthorpe Road temporarily replaced by rainbow colours.
What a great idea. We all want this city to be inclusive and tolerant. A recent homophobic letter sent to a gay couple in Hemingbrough shows there are still pockets of ignorance.
A colourful demonstration during Gay Pride week would show the bigots they’re an outdated minority.
