WE all know that drink-driving is wrong. But how many of us realise that driving under the influence of drugs can be just as dangerous? And we’re not talking only about illegal drugs – some medicines can make you drowsy and unfit to drive.

A new law comes into force on Monday designed to make it easier to prosecute drug-drivers – both those on illegal substances, and those dosed up on medication. North Yorkshire Police will be doing roadside checks, using cheek swabs to test for drugs. Those over the limit will face an automatic 12-month driving ban, plus a fine or even imprisonment.

That may seem harsh for those on medication. But medicines carry clear warnings if they do make you drowsy. It is your responsibility to check.

Ultimately, by discouraging drug-driving, these new police powers could save lives. And you can’t say you weren’t warned...
