YORK'S proposed congestion commission looks almost certain now to be put on the back burner until after the May local elections.

That is probably for the best. To work, the commission would need all-party support. But in its present form it is very much the brainchild of the Labour group.

To commit to such a commission now, when the political makeup of the council may change in a few months, would make little sense.

That said, York's chronic congestion does need tackling. The issue should be looked at again in May, once the new council is in place.
