IN September 2009, teenage jockeys Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson were tragically killed during a fire at their flats. Yesterday their memories were honoured by the Princess Royal, who was in Malton to officially open a new accommodation centre prompted by Jamie and Jan’s deaths.

The £450,000 facility was paid for by a fundraising campaign launched by the charity Racing Welfare and is designed to house young people, many of whom may not have been away from home before.

It was fitting that Jamie’s mother also attended the opening ceremony, the first time Mrs Kyne has been in Malton since her son died. She welcomed the fact that the town now has somewhere new for budding young jockeys to stay.

More than 75 guests attended the ceremony at the Old Lodge Hotel in Malton and while yesterday will have been a highly emotional one for Mrs Kyne, hopefully meeting Princess Anne will have helped.

That and the knowledge young jockeys of her late son’s age will now have a purpose-built facility where they can live safely away from home.
