ONE year before her untimely death, Jane Tomlinson released the second volume of her memoirs You Can't Take It With You. It turned out to be a prophetic title.

Despite suffering from terminal cancer, Jane raised £1.85 million for charity by completing a series of athletic challenges. The foundation in her name later set itself a target of £5 million, but today we can reveal that Jane's legacy has now reached £7.6 million.

This is a phenomenal achievement and has benefitted so many good causes, especially small local charities that are too often overlooked.

And when you stop to think that much of this money was raised during the UK's longest and deepest postwar recession, it is even more remarkable.

At first Jane, and her husband Mike, launched the Jane Tomlinson's Run For All. Now, nine years later, there are five 10ks, two half marathons, including our own in York, a marathon and junior runs in her name.

Which means hundreds of runners are now following in Jane's footsteps. They, like Mike and everyone else involved with organising events in Jane's memory, should be very proud of all they have done and will continue doing to help good causes.

We salute them all, in precisely the same way they salute Jane Tomlinson every time they pull on their running shoes.
