AS one of the UK’s science cities, York’s 21st century reputation belies its historic image. That reputation is about to be boosted further with a £100 million science campus featuring up to 800 new jobs, at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera), based at Sand Hutton.

Today came the news that national business services provider Capita has acquired a 75 per cent stake in the agency. Along with the universities, science park and newfound UNESCO media arts status, we think this helps confirm York’s status as one of the most vibrant cities in the world.

Until now Fera has rarely troubled the headlines, but we should be proud to call it a York industry. The agency has an enviable reputation and leads the way in plant health and bee research. It also identified horse meat in the food chain two years ago.

But Capita’s Andy Parker says Fera has not yet been able to reach its full commercial potential because of limits on investment.

Now there are no such restrictions. Coupling Capita’s business acumen with the expertise of Fera’s scientists should be an exciting combination, we wish this initiative well.
