WHILE the Tour de France was a great success for York and Yorkshire in general, not everything associated with the cycle race rose to the occasion.

One definite low point in this city was the Grand Departy at Huntington Stadium, which ran up a loss to taxpayers of £187,000 in an event which also raised safety concerns.

Now a committee of City of York Council has decreed that this matter cannot be looked into until after the election in May, thanks to the pressing demands of other investigations.

This is a great shame. It would have been encouraging to see this matter fully discussed before then. Let’s hope the inquiry won’t end up being buried.
