BILBROUGH is widely regarded as the most difficult stretch of the A64 in York, but there have also been a number of pedestrian accidents, including fatalities, at this notorious blackspot. The latest to be killed by a car while crossing the road was Kevin Younger on Monday.

This time last year, following a pedestrian fatality, Selby district Councillor Richard Musgrave called for the speed limit at Bilbrough Top to be reduced to 50mph. He also suggested other options might include overhead lighting and a new footbridge.

In the wake of yet another tragedy, we urge the authorities to look again at safety issues, and on this part of the A64 in particular. Perhaps signage warning of the dangers of pedestrians on the road might be worth considering, maybe detailing the accidents, to discourage pedestrians and/or alert motorists to stay particularly vigilant could be considered.

Anything that prevents another tragic loss of life at such a dangerous place on the A64 has to be up for discussion.
