IF YOU have an opinion on how flood defence money should be spent in York, then now is the time to voice it.

The six-week consultation period on City of York Council’s long-awaited Flood Risk Management Strategy, which outlines measures to reduce the risk of flooding in York, closes tomorrow.

The strategy includes a number of key proposals, including spending £2 million on improving the Foss barrier; £3.5 million replacing the Burdyke and Holgate pumping station; £1.5 million on the Clifton Ings barrier bank; and £5 million to improve flood protection in areas such as Bishopthorpe, Acaster Malbis, Fulford, Clementhorpe, Naburn, Tower Street and Nether Poppleton.

It also sets out strategies to help York’s ageing drainage system cope better with flash floods caused by heavy rain. But if you think the council has missed something out, now is the time to say so. “We want to hear from anybody and everybody,” York’s flood risk manager Steve Wragg said when the consultation was launched six weeks ago.

Even if your comments don’t lead to a major change in the strategy, they may well help the council better understand how flooding affects people.
