WHO says there's no such thing as community spirit any more?
For three days, teams of volunteers have been working to transform the garden of the Foxwood Community Centre in this year's York Cares Big Community Challenge.
They have laid new paths, created raised beds and garden areas, and built a brick barbecue and pergola.
"It's been a wonderful transformation," said Shirley Gumley of the Foxwood Residents' Association. "I can't believe that we have seen these changes in three days."
Best of all, it has been a genuine community effort.
The volunteers have come from York businesses and organisations including Aviva, insurance brokers DE Ford, the city council, Benenden Health and East Coast Mainline.
Evora Construction provided supervision and building materials, and other organisations - including Arnold Laver Timberwork, Jewsons, RHS Harlow Carr, Waitrose, the University of York's estates department and Poppleton Community Railway Nursery - chipped in with materials, plants and expertise.
Well done everyone.
Here's to next year...
